KOUTS, Ind. (WNDU) - An EF-3 tornado touched down in Porter County on June 11, according to preliminary results from the National Weather Service.

Severe weather tore through the Midwest, leaving a trail of damage across multiple states. Photos from Porter County show downed powerlines, uprooted trees, overturned RVs and more.

Nearly 70,000 families in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan were left without power. Companies started the restoration process once storms passed, and thousands of customers, but not all, had power back the next morning.

Elkhart was another community hit hard by the storms. Fire Chief Rodney Dale said his community had trees fallen on house, garages and other properties. He added that no injuries were reported.

At least two injuries were reported in Wabash County. One Wabash family recalled the roof blowing off of their home, injuring him and his wife.

“Finally, the windows blew in on us in the bedroom, and my wife says she was bleeding, and we got her to the bathroom, just start looking around,” said Merrill Bishir. “The roof was gone, our front porch is gone.”

American Red Cross opened shelters to provide support and safe refuge to communities recovering from the storms. The shelters include water, snacks and a place to charge electronic devices.

Red Cross volunteers will be available at the shelters to help.
