Indiana Michigan Power and Midwest Energy and Communication urged everyone to stay safe as damage is assessed.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Tens of thousands of residents in northwest Indiana and south Michigan are still without power after a night of severe storms thunderstorms and tornadoes.
Indiana Michigan Power reported 43,800 customers are without power as of Friday morning, down from the peak of 62,000 customers. Midwest Energy and Communications reported about 8,300 of its customers are also without power.
IMP said they need to assess damage before giving estimated power restoration times in South Bend and Elkhart areas. The company said they expect power to be restored in Fort Wayne, Benton Harbor and Buchanan by 11 p.m. Friday.
Both IMP and MEC urged everyone to take safety precautions as restoration efforts continue. This includes staying away from debris and downed or low-hanging power lines, treating non-working traffic lights as stop signs, and using generators safely.
