SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Police have confirmed that a 69-year-old man has died after he was shot by a South Bend police officer this morning.

Officers were called around 6:40 a.m. to the area of the East Race and LaSalle Street on reports of a man threatening with a knife. The caller told police the man had chased him with a knife and then stabbed his vehicle.

When officers encountered the suspect, one of them unsuccessfully deployed his taser in an attempt to disarm and detain the suspect. A short time later, a second officer fired his gun, hitting the suspect.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Police say they are not identifying him until his family is notified. An autopsy on the suspect has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Police also have not identified the officer involved in the shooting at this time.

An investigation into the shooting will continue by the St. Joseph County and Mishawaka police departments. Once all evidence has been processed and reviewed, all evidence and findings will be forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for further review.
