ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - A man was taken to the hospital and another was arrested after a crash involving a horse-drawn buggy Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. at State Road 13 and County Road 24, about a mile south of Middlebury.

Police said a northbound 2019 Chevrolet Silverado was following a black horse and buggy too closely and hit the rear of the buggy. The impact flipped the buggy onto its side.

The buggy driver, a 42-year-old Middlebury man, was taken to the hospital with head and arm pain.

Investigators said the pickup driver, 66-year-old Edward Herr of Elkhart, left the scene and is suspected of driving impaired. He was booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in bodily injury.

The crash marks the second hit-and-run buggy crash in Michiana within the past two weeks. The other crash happened near Kosciusko County on May 29 and injured five people. A woman was arrested in that case and is facing charges including driving while intoxicated.
