DoorDash driver accused of pepper-spraying Arby’s bag after dropping off food delivery

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) - A food delivery driver is accused of dropping off an Arby’s bag and using pepper spray towards it.

Mark Cardin and his wife said it happened early Sunday morning as they decided to order DoorDash just past midnight. But it didn’t take them long to realize something was wrong with their food.

“I noticed my wife had started eating and she started choking and gasping, and after she had a couple of bites of her food, she actually threw up,” he said.

Cardin said he started to check the food a little closer.

“I had a look at the bag and saw that there was some kind of spray or something,” he said. “The bag had been tampered with. So I pulled up my doorbell camera and saw that the lady who dropped the food off had actually tampered with it on purpose for some reason.”

Cardin shared his doorbell video, showing the delivery driver dropping off the food, appearing to show her spraying the food bag after dropping it off.

“It’s horrific,” he said. “We assume it’s pepper spray, that’s more than likely what it is, but now in this day and age, it could’ve been anything. It could’ve been rat poison, it could’ve been fentanyl. I mean, my wife could’ve been dead.”

Cardin immediately contacted DoorDash and then law enforcement.

He said DoorDash refunded his money, but did not seem to look into the incident very seriously.

“I definitely want to see her prosecuted,” Cardin said.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office is investigating and the delivery driver could potentially face felony charges.

Cardin said they didn’t know the driver, and they did tip her.

“We live in a terrible world right now,” he said. “Horrific. People are mean for no reason. There was no reason to do what she did.”

Cardin is using this experience to encourage others to be alert at all times.

“I would say to anybody, if you order food on any kind of delivery service, make sure you have a doorbell [camera],” Cardin said. “This is making me second-guess ever ordering food from anywhere ever again.”
