High school senior in critical condition after being hit by state trooper
MILACA, Minn. (KARE) – The family of a Minnesota teenager is holding out hope after two brothers were hurt in a crash involving a state trooper.
The trooper was responding to a crash the brothers had been in before hitting them while they were waiting outside their truck.
More than three weeks later, one of the boys, Blayke Mostad, is still in critical condition.
The Milaca High School senior is spending the time he should be preparing for prom and celebrating his upcoming graduation in a hospital bed instead.
His sister, Baylie Lesnick, said his condition is still critical.
“At this point, it’s day 23 and he still has not been breathing on his own,” she said.
Mostad’s younger brother, Braxton, who was with him the night of the accident, said they were with one of their friends when they were first hit by a wrong-way driver on Highway 10 in Clear Lake.
All three of the teens in the vehicle were not hurt in this crash.
The following collision involving the state trooper is what turned their world upside down.
“I look back, I was like, ‘Oh, Blayke cops are here already.’ And he’s like, ‘OK.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, he’s not slowing down.’ And I kind of don’t remember anything after that,” Braxton said.
The state trooper collided with the brothers while coming to check out the accident.
According to the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the accident, state trooper Ryan Moeser was driving in the left lane on Highway 10 when he came upon the first crash and was “unable to avoid a collision.”
Braxton said it took between three and five minutes for the trooper to show up on the scene, and he had no idea how the trooper hit them.
“Somebody that should be there to help and protect them is the one that caused the most damage,” Lesnick said.
Lesnick said Mostad is recovering from his 15th surgery after suffering severe spine, brain and leg injuries.
Braxton suffered a lacerated eye and a torn ACL.
“Our brother is the strongest kid we know, so he’s been doing the best that he can, and we have faith in him,” Lesnick said.
The final celebratory moments for a high school senior were stripped away from the family in the blink of an eye.
“You know, we should be watching Blayke at prom tomorrow at Grand March, and we won’t be able to do that,” Lesnick said.
The state trooper is currently on paid administrative leave.
The sheriff’s office said the case has not been sent to the county attorney’s office for review of any possible criminal charges.
