GREENVILLE, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) - One person is in custody after an incident involving a suspicious package halted traffic for hours on Interstate 85 in South Carolina.

According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), the incident caused a traffic backup near Exit 44 at White Horse Road in Greenville.

Traffic was backed up for over four hours while law enforcement investigated the scene.

Greenville County dispatch said the incident involved a tractor-trailer.

Greenville County deputies said SWAT and Bomb team members were called to the scene to assist South Carolina State Transport Police following a reported traffic stop just after 3:30 p.m.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) bomb squad and FBI is also assisting with this investigation.

Gov. Henry McMaster mentioned the incident in a post on the social media platform X.

“I-85 near mile marker 44 is temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution due to a bomb threat issued during a routine traffic stop this afternoon by SC Transport Police,” the governor said. “SCDOT and state law enforcement are on the scene, and normal I-85 traffic will resume once the tractor trailer is swept and cleared by SELD’s bomb squad.”

The spill was originally reported as a hazardous materials spill on the SCDOT website. Officials said that was an automated system error.

As of 7:36 p.m., traffic started moving again along I-85 southbound .
