What started in a 400-square-foot building has grown to 10,000 square feet.

For three decades, the Sister Maura Brannick Health Center has been providing health care in St. Joseph County for people who can't afford it.

Doctors and staff are mainly volunteers, and they care for those without medical coverage and who don't qualify for Medicare or Medicaid.

Sister Maura gathered with friends on Thursday to pray, reflect and celebrate the center's 30th anniversary.

"I was working on the west side and saw so many pockets of poverty, and I thought if we could just help them and get them back so they could work and they could have a decent life. That was our goal: to help people," Sister Maura explained.

Sister Maura still comes in one day a week to help at the center.
