28-year-old shot to death while loading groceries into car, police say

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - A man in Ohio died Sunday morning after he was shot Saturday while he was loading his groceries into his car outside a grocery store.

The Maple Heights Police Department said 28-year-old Timothy Kappenhagen died just before 7 a.m. from injuries he sustained outside the Giant Eagle store located on Warrensville Center Road.

The police department said officers were called to the store around 1:40 p.m. Saturday after Kappenhagen had been shot.

Police said Kappenhagen was loading groceries into his vehicle when the suspect approached him. The two struggled before police said the suspect shot Kappenhagen.

According to a release, the suspect then took Kappenhagen’s vehicle and fled the scene.

Kappenhagen was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Police recovered the vehicle, but said no arrests have been made.

Giant Eagle released a statement addressing the shooting.

“Our thoughts are with the victim of today’s violent act that took place in the parking lot of the Southgate Giant Eagle,” the statement said. “We are working closely with law enforcement to assist in its investigation.”
