5 shot, 10 run over during mass gathering in school parking lot

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - Five people were shot and 10 others were run over during a mass gathering in an Ohio school parking lot early Monday morning.

Akron Police Lieutenant Michael Murphy Jr. said there was a crowd of about 100 to 150 people, mostly teenagers, in the parking lot. They were having a party outside of the Mason Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio.

They did not have permission to be on the property for the “impromptu get-together,” according to police.

Authorities said the shooting happened around 3 a.m.

Surveillance footage caught the large crowd running and taking cover as the shots were fired, according to police.

Five people, ranging in age from 14 to 20, were shot and taken to local hospitals.

“Teenagers have no business being out partying at 3 a.m. We need parents and our community to work with us to ensure that children are home when they need to be,” Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said.

Police said 10 people were run over or hit by cars trying to leave the party.

Police said all victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating, and no one has been arrested or charged with the shooting.
