South Bend Cubs seeking first win of 2025 season in tonight’s home opener

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Summer is around the corner, but baseball is already back in South Bend!

The South Bend Cubs opened up their season on the road over the weekend in Beloit, and now tonight they make their return to Michiana for their home opener against the Peoria Chiefs.

It’ll be a chilly opening day for the Cubs, but the team is excited to finally play in front of the home crowd at Four Winds Field.

The Cubs kicked off the season this past weekend against Beloit, but it wasn’t the start they had hoped for. Beloit swept the Cubs with three consecutive wins.

However, the roster remains stacked with talent, featuring some fresh faces and familiar ones for South Bend fans.

One pitcher to watch out for is Jaxon Wiggins. He’s currently ranked as the No. 10 prospect in the Cubs organization. Also among the ranked prospects is Christian Hernandez, who holds the No. 11 spot.

Despite the tough start, South Bend Cubs Team President Joe Hart sees a lot of potential in this group.

“I think it’s a great group. We have 14 guys who are returning from last year, so there’s a good veteran presence,” Hart says. “The big thing is there’s a lot of unity between these guys. They’re there to pick each other up. You’ve seen it in practice, and you’ve seen it since they’ve been here. I think we’ve got a lot of good things in store here.”
