ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) - A major push for affordable homeownership is underway in Elkhart County.

Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County celebrated a new development at Legacy Park on Thursday — which is part of one of the organization’s largest local housing investments in a three year period.

Habitat for Humanity plans to build 36 homes in the county over three years.

Located along County Road 15 on Elkhart’s north side, Habitat for Humanity plans to have 22 of those homes at Legacy Park.

The milestone comes as Habitat for Humanity celebrates 50 years worldwide.

Future homeowner Heather Clark said her road to homeownership has been bumpy.

“Before I joined Habitat, I was looking to purchase a home, and every home that I could afford was crap,” Clark said. “The homes that I couldn’t afford they were nice, but do I live in struggle my whole life just to be able to afford a nice home?”

Legacy Park was one of two housing developments celebrated in Elkhart on Thursday. Earlier in the day, 515 East Apartments opened with 48 income-restricted units.
