Federal prosecutions have spiked in northern Indiana. Here’s what that means for your safety

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Northern Indiana’s top federal prosecutor, Adam Mildred, took office in January 2026. Under his leadership, federal prosecutions have spiked in northern Indiana.
Mildred sat down with WNDU’s Joshua Short to talk about why his office is stepping up to fight crime in Michiana, and what these record numbers mean for your safety.
“We are here to do the work for the American people,” Mildred said. “We are out here to vigorously enforce our nation’s laws. That’s our message. That’s our communication.”
Mildred said his office created the SCOPE, or Small County Outreach, program. Counties involved in SCOPE have a lawyer from Mildred’s staff available to the elected prosecutors for help.
According to Mildred, his office is among the first to evaluate how a law enforcement agency is investigating crimes.
“We’re the first guardians of the Constitution, in additions, of course, to our men and women that are on the line in law enforcement,” Mildred said.
Prosecuting those who illegally work with guns and drugs and participate in making, distributing or harboring child sexual abuse material is among the top priorities for Mildred’s office.
