Mishawaka residents continue to clean up last week’s storm damage
Homeowners work to remove fallen trees, repair property after storms
MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) - Residents are still working to remove trees from their property several days after storms ripped through Michiana.
The damage ranged from minor to significant. Timothy Messer watched it happen from his window.
“I saw the tree fall from my window there. I heard some debris hitting the top of the house and I got up to look out and just in time to see that fall in the garage,” Messer said. “I said, ‘Oh, there goes my garage.’”
Messer said he still doesn’t know the damage done to his truck, which was inside the garage. He is now working to get it open.
Next door, another homeowner showed damage to his roof from a nearby tree. The damage was visible both inside and around his home.
With more storm chances forecast this week, neighbor Ryan Deal is preparing.
“Take precautions that we normally do and take down our umbrellas and stuff like that and plants that may blow over and that kind of stuff but try to get it under shelter,” Deal said.
Deal said the experience has changed his perspective.
“You are used to getting a phone call from a friend or whatever that they lost a tree and you go over and help them but when it happens to you, it really changes things and puts it in perspective how fortunate you can be,” Deal said.
