1 dead, 2 rescued after workers trapped in grain bin

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. (WFIE/Gray News) - One person was killed and two others were rescued after being trapped inside a grain bin in Illinois on Monday.

The Wabash County Sheriff’s Office says several crews responded to a 911 call in reference to three men being trapped in a grain bin at Friendsville Avenue and North 1550 Boulevard in Mount Carmel at 9:24 a.m.

Officials said two men were able to get out of the bin and were okay.

One person died and had to be recovered from the grain bin. Authorities identified him as 21-year-old Steven Haase.

Authorities said they were able to get Haase out just after 1 p.m. Monday.

Mount Carmel Mayor Joe Judge says he knew Haase personally.

Judge said Haase was very involved in the farming community, especially the Future Farmers of America in high school.

“His peers really depended upon him and I know the farming community really depended on him and everybody at the Quail Club as he was always volunteering and doing things to be community oriented,” he said.

The mayor says Mount Carmel has faced a lot of tragedy over the last few months.

He said the community came together and held vigils to remember Haase.

Several agencies helped at the scene including Mount Carmel Fire, Patoka Township Fire, Wabash General EMTs, Wabash County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wabash County Coroner.
