Mom charged with DUI after running stop sign, causing crash that killed 8-year-old daughter, officials say

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) — A woman in South Carolina is accused of driving under the influence and causing a crash that killed her 8-year-old daughter and injured four others.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Jacosha Simpson was driving a 2006 Mazda sedan around 10 p.m. on March 14 when she ran a stop sign, veered off the right side of the road and went into an open field, striking several trees before hitting an embankment.

There were no other cars involved, the highway patrol said.

Officials said five passengers were in the car.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said 8-year-old Jaylin Simpson died at the scene. She was Jacosha Simpson’s daughter.

Officials said the other four passengers were taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital. Three of them were children ages 9, 8 and 6.

The Spartanburg County Solicitor’s Office said in court Tuesday that the fourth passenger was a man whose arm had to be amputated.

Jacosha Simpson is charged with felony DUI, felony DUI with great bodily injury, child endangerment and failing to properly restrain a child, officials said.

A judge set Simpson’s total bond at $26,000 and ordered that she not drive or consume alcohol.
