Parking canopy collapses on several cars from heavy snow at apartment complex

CANTON, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - A parking canopy collapsed on several cars late Sunday night at an apartment complex in Ohio.

At least five vehicles were damaged by the fallen awning at Oak Glen Apartments in Canton.

Heavy snow fell across Stark County this weekend, with parts of Canton reporting more than a foot of accumulation.

Resident Logan Hysong described the moments after hearing the collapse from his apartment.

“I was sitting in my living room last night at like 11:30, and I heard like a really loud bang and a car alarm,” Hysong said. “I thought it was a plow truck that slammed into like a car or something. I look out, and I see the entire thing collapsed.

He believes the heavy snowfall could be to blame.

“It’s a combination of that,” Hysong said. “You can look in the posts; there’s quite a bit of rust under there.”

In a message to people who live there, Oak Glen’s management offered an apology and said carport charges for February will be removed.

Oak Glen said two maintenance companies visited on Tuesday to craft a repair plan.

There’s no timeline for how long repairs could take.
