High school senior shot, killed at park where students were taking photos for homecoming dance, police say

LORAIN, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – A high school senior was accidentally shot and killed at a park in Ohio while students were taking pictures for their homecoming dance, police said.

According to the Lorain Police Department, 18-year-old Isaac Brocco-Rivera was found unresponsive in his vehicle at Lakeview Park around 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

Officials said he was a senior at Lorain Success Academy.

Police said they responded to a report of a shooting at the park. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle parked near the end of the parking lot. Brocco-Rivera was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat with at least one gunshot wound to the head.

Brocco-Rivera was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Captain Jacob Morris with the Lorain Police Department said there were a lot of people in the park taking pictures for the homecoming dance.

A GoFundMe page for Brocco-Rivera’s family said, “He left for his senior homecoming and never made it home.”

Multiple people who were near the shooting were interviewed by police.

In a news release Friday, police said they determined Brocco-Rivera was accidentally shot by a juvenile family member while both were sitting in a vehicle.

Police said the child was handling a firearm inside the vehicle when it was accidentally discharged, striking Brocco-Rivera.

It’s unclear if that family member remained at the scene when police arrived, but police initially said Brocco-Rivera was found alone in the vehicle.

Officials recovered a gun at the scene.

The Lorain Police Department and Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office are working to determine if any charges will be filed. The exact age of the family member who shot Brocco-Rivera was not released.

In a statement, Lorain City Schools confirmed Brocco-Rivera’s death and said it had engaged its crisis team to provide extra support for students.
