Woman accused of circumventing ignition interlock device before deadly DUI crash

SALINE COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH/Gray News) - Authorities have released new details about a woman arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash in Kansas last week.

Deanna Sommerfield, known as “June” by her family and friends, died in the collision. Friends described Sommerfield as someone truly special.

“She was everything. There are no words to describe such a person,” Sommerfield’s friends said.

Last Friday, the 55-year-old and her husband were driving on K-140 when they were hit head-on by Kayla Errebo, who is suspected of driving under the influence, authorities said.

Errebo, 32, made her first court appearance Tuesday morning on charges that include second-degree murder, reckless driving, circumvention of an ignition interlock device and improper driving on a laned roadway.

Court records revealed that she has a history of drinking and driving.

“It’s obviously upsetting that this is a repeated pattern with this individual,” the victim’s friends said.

In January 2024, Errebo was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as well as for tampering with an ignition interlock device.

Later, in June 2024, she was arrested again for driving under the influence, fleeing from an officer, driving without a valid license and operating a vehicle without the required ignition interlock device.

Authorities said Errebo pleaded guilty to those charges in October 2024 and was sentenced to one year of probation, which was set to end in November of this year.

Sadly, her latest charges are in connection with a fatality.

“Never get behind the wheel while you’re drinking,” Sommerfield’s friends said. “Unfortunately, this person hasn’t learned that lesson, and it cost the life of our good friend.”

The state has filed to revoke Errebo’s probation. She has hired an attorney, but he was not present for her Tuesday court appearance.

Errebo is scheduled in court again for Aug. 22. A judge set her bail at $1 million. If she makes bail, Errebo can’t leave jail without a monitoring device and a device that measures the presence of alcohol.

Authorities said Errebo is prohibited from operating a motor vehicle and ordered to have no contact with any named victims or witnesses in the case.

Sommerfield’s friends said they are seeking justice, but they are also finding solace in spreading kindness throughout the world in her name.

Loved ones have set up a GoFundMe to help Sommerfield’s husband with medical bills.
