Grandson mourns the loss of woman killed during Kansas City Chiefs parade

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH/Gray News) - The grandson of a woman who died in a shooting during the Kansas City Chiefs parade said she made a huge difference in people’s lives.

Lisa Lopez-Galvan meant the world to her family, especially her grandson, Julian Banuelos.

“My grandma was so cool,” he said. “She was a DJ, she coached basketball, she coached softball, she was always just an amazing person, she was into everything. My grandma, she was always trying to help small businesses, she would always give everybody shoutouts because she just wanted everyone to succeed.”

Banuelos said Lopez-Galvan would make chorizo burritos for the family every Sunday before they went into Kansas City.

“She’d always have music playing and she’d always be there dancing with us while she’s cooking, always had Mexican, Latino music just going,” he said. “It was always a fun household to be in.”

Lopez-Galvan wasn’t the only person in Banuelos’ family who was shot in the parade. His uncle and two cousins were also injured and taken to the hospital. It had been an emotional week for the entire family as they grieve the loss of someone they loved, Banuelos said.

“I’m about to have a child of my own, and what breaks my heart the most is that I can’t see my child grow up with my grandma,” Banuelos said. “She was such an amazing person, and to know her was to love her.”
