Lightning believed to have sparked South Bend house fire
No injuries reported in Monday afternoon fire on Leeper Avenue
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Firefighters believe lightning sparked a house fire Monday afternoon.
The South Bend Fire Department said crews were called just after 1:30 p.m. to the 1300 block of Leeper Avenue for a lightning strike investigation after a caller said they saw lightning strike near a home.
When they arrived, crews reportedly found a house that was on fire. The fire department said the fire was quickly brought under control.
While the investigation is ongoing, investigators believe the fire was caused by lightning.
Fire officials said there were no injuries and nobody was home at the time of the fire.
This marks the fifth lightning strike on a home or building we’ve reported on leading to a fire this spring. The others include a house on Notre Dame Avenue in South Bend, a house on Galaxy Drive in Granger, a massive warehouse fire on McKinley Avenue in Mishawaka and Hurwich Farms Apartments in South Bend.
