Sixteen people were hospitalized after a crash on the Indiana Toll Road.

According to police it was caused by distracted driving.

The crash involved a passenger bus and two semis. It happened at the 95.2 mile marker in the westbound lanes.

According to Indiana State Police Trooper Ted Bohner, the people on the bus were from Shanghai, China. They were heading to Chicago to go back home. All people on the bus were adults.

The bus was travelling behind a semi as they approached a construction zone. A second semi was following behind. Police say the driver was distracted and hit the bus because traffic slowed down.

"It's something we're seeing time and time again with the construction everybody needs to be aware that traffic can be slowed or stopped," Bohner said. "Once you're going down from two lanes down to lane closure, kinda that bottle neck, that's when traffic will start to back up."

According to police, distracted driving is one of the main causes of accidents on the Toll Road, and things like phones are one of the biggest culprits.

"If you drive this stretch of road it's just littered with skid marks and a majority of those are just people who aren't paying attention to the traffic in front of them," Bohner said.

Police said people need to pay attention to the signs, the speed limit dropping down in construction zones and to use common sense. When traffic backs up in construction areas, police are stationed in front of bottlenecks.

"They're trying to warn traffic by sitting beyond the backup with lights on to get people's attention with 'hey there's something coming up ahead," Bohner said.

The tour bus was full of shattered glass Thursday night, a broken reminder of how serious the crash could have been.

"We could be talking about a major, major tragedy right now and luckily we're just talking about complaints of pain," Bohner said.

All 16 people on the bus were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. As of midday Friday, all 16 had been released from the hospital.

A portion of the toll road was blocked, but it re-opened around 7 p.m.

The truck driver was cited for traveling too closely.
