Coroner identifies man found dead in Elkhart woods

The Elkhart County coroner has identified the man who was found dead in a wooded area near an apartment complex.

On Tuesday, he was identified as John Mullins, a 50-year-old from Elkhart.

Officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of Visscher Drive at around 10 a.m. Monday in response to a shooting with injuries that reportedly happened overnight.

During their search, officers found a crime scene and evidence that led them to the woods north of Walnut Trails Apartments.

According to Elkhart County Coroner James P. Elliott, MDI, Mullins died from a gunshot wound. His manner of death was listed as homicide. The incident remains under investigation.

Family members have set up an online fundraising

to help pay for Mullins' funeral.
