SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A social media campaign rallied hundreds behind a South Bend woman with multiple sclerosis.

With the help of the hashtag Heather Needs a Van supporters raised more than $50,000 for a wheelchair accessible van.

Heather Smith is a single mother with MS.

Before, she had to rely on friends and family to help load and unload her scooter, but she has now gained new independence.

Smith's family said the outpouring of support they have received from friends and strangers has been overwhelming.

Smith was actually $5,000 short of the goal, but the owner of Superior Mobility came through to cover the rest.
