South Bend mother charged with felony after car crash

Charges have been filed against a South Bend mother who police say was high on drugs when she got into a serious car accident back in April.

Depheny Stewart, 23, was charged this week with a class D felony after crashing her vehicle with cocaine and marijuana in her system.

Police say Stewart made an illegal left turn off Western Ave. onto Walnut St.

An oncoming SUV couldn't stop in time and hit Stewart's vehicle, trapping she and her young child inside. The wreck left Xavier Stwart, 6, critically injured.

This isn't the first time Stewart has been in trouble with the law. She was arrested in 2007 for disorderly conduct and again in 2009 for an unspecified preliminary charge.

Ironically just days before her arrest, Stewart posted this sentiment to her Facebook Page:

"Life is like an adventure, you have to gain experience from it. By not experiencing the real world, there's no meaning to life. Life is like a game, if you don't play the game the right way, you end up playing it the hard way."
