South Bend man refuses to pay half of his taxes

A South Bend man has found a way to cut his income tax bill in half, at least on paper.

Peter Smith heads up Michiana War Tax Refusers. Since 1969, he has refused to pay the portion of his tax bill that goes to fund the military.

“Well its 47 percent of the tax this year goes to the military,” he says. “So we would pay 53 percent of the tax willingly and then the other 47, we would refuse to pay until the IRS came and took it from us.”

Smith says the IRS has always managed to settle the score by tapping his bank account and his retirement account, against his will. But he says at least he's not giving it to them.

Smith served four years in the U.S. Navy. He first adopted his anti-war stance after Vietnam.
