A South Bend police officer hospitalized Wednesday night after he was hit head-on by a drunk driver.

The officer was driving on Sample Street around 9:00 p.m. to a domestic disturbance call without using his emergency lights and siren when another driver hit his patrol car.

The other driver was traveling eastbound on Sample Street and tried to make a left turn on to Arnold Street in front of the squad car, sending the officer into a nearby utility pole. The driver then ran to a few blocks north where he was apprehended.

Both drivers sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident.

The officer's name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Sample Street was shut down into the early morning hours while the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team investigated the accident. The FACT team was called in because it was initially believed the injuries were more serious.
