The city of South Bend may soon be placing a million-dollar-plus bet that it can lure some new business to town.
The Redevelopment Commission is taking an aggressive approach by partnering with Great Lakes Capital for the proposed construction of a $7.2-million industrial building in the Portage Prairie Development.
The structure would be built on "spec," meaning that no one has been lined up to lease the space.
The city would be asked to spend up to $1.6-million on the 200,000-square-foot structure.
Officials believe the project would address a lack of available industrial space in the market.
The deal is set to go before the South Bend Common Council at Monday's meeting.
