A preliminary investigation into why an Amtrak derailed Sunday night near Niles is underway.
The National Transportation Safety Board addressed the issue at a press conference at the Staybridge Suites in South Bend Monday morning. Officials said the investigation will be ongoing and no initial observations as to why the train derailed could be made.
The train had just left the Niles station and was headed to it's next stop in Dowagiac when it derailed. It's final stop would have been Pontiac.
174 passengers were on board when the train ran off the tracks. 12 people, including some crew members were taken to the hosptial. Officials said today, all but one of those have been released. None of the injuries appeared to be serious.
