Man in custody after allegedly robbing pharmacy Monday afternoon

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- A man is in custody Monday afternoon after allegedly robbing an area pharmacy.

It happened at the Kroger on Ireland Road in South Bend shortly after 12:30 p.m.

Police say the suspect ran from Kroger to a nearby Applebee's parking lot where officers later detained him for questioning.

We talked with one witness who was waiting in line to pick-up prescriptions when he saw the suspect vault over the pharmacy counter and go toward a particular section of medicine.

"One lady ran into a closet, and that's the lady that saw him face, up-close, too. But, the other ladies just kind of spread out and just hugged the corners," said "Joe," whom we have given a different name to accommodate his request.

Joe hid behind a post, fearing the suspect had a weapon. But when the robber leaped back over the counter and dropped pills, Joe felt some relief and tried to stop the suspect.

"There were some of these aluminum canes there. I picked up a couple when he jumped over the counter," Joe recalled.

Joe hit the suspect several times, who threatened to kill him twice.

"He left 10 to 15 [pills] on the ground. He had 30 or 40 in the bag, at least some large ones, and a bunch of little ones, codeine stuff and some hard-core drugs," said Joe.

Nobody was injured during the strong-arm robbery. Police expect to arrest the suspect, described as a black male in his 20s, after interrogation.
