Fire breaks out at a South Bend Speedway

Firefighters in South Bend were busy battling a blaze Wednesday morning, after a propane tank caught fire.

It happened around 11:30 in the parking lot behind the Speedway Gas Station on the corner of State Road 23 and Edison. Crews arrived to find four 100 pounds of propane tanks and other machinery on a trailer engulfed in flames.

Gas station employees and folks in nearby homes were evacuated while crews put out the blaze, cooled the tanks and determined the scene was safe. Investigators say the fire was accidental and caused by a mechanical failure which allowed escaping gas to ignite.

There was no reported damage to the Speedway, which was in the final stages of remodeling and training and was set to open Thursday. No one was injured.
