UPDATE: Victim identified in Clay Township death investigation

St. Joseph County, Ind. -- The Clay Township woman found dead in her garage this morning has been identified as 57-year-old Elizabeth Maike.

Plans call for an autopsy to be performed Friday morning to try and determine the cause of death.

St. Joseph County Police officers got the call at about 8:30 Wednesday morning by from a passerby who noticed Maike’s garage door was open. Maike lives on in the northwest corner lot at the corner of Kenilworth and Darden Streets.

Shortly after police arrived, the investigation was handed over to the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit.

“Just some observations that our officers made, our officers, unfortunately wind up investigating a lot of natural deaths. There were a couple of things about this one that didn’t look routine, so to speak,” said Asst. Chief William Thompson.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Michael Grzegorek told NewsCenter 16 that there was something about the scene that raised some red flags with officers. “We need to determine what the cause of death is and interview anybody that might know something about the goings on here last night, early this morning.”

Several neighbors felt compelled to stop by the scene and see what all the commotion was about. “I’ve been over here before. They had several yard sales that I’ve stopped at. Just curious to find out what was going on,” said Gloria Gray of South Bend. “It’s very scary, that’s got my adrenaline going.

At this point in the investigation, it’s simply not known whether the death was the result of foul play. “We honestly don’t at this point. Those are some of the tests and some of the investigative steps that metro homicide is going through right now,” said Chief Thompson.
