Congratulations to Triton High School on being named the 16 Spirit School of the Year.

Triton, a small 1A school with an enrollment of just over 300 students, received 31% of the more than 4,000 individual votes cast to defeat last year’s Spirit School winner Concord, which finished with 29% of the vote. The Trojans also defeated other larger schools like Riley (19%), Mishawaka (11%) and Adams (11%).

On Thursday, NewsCenter 16 Sports Director Angelo Di Carlo will present Triton with a plaque and a check for $1,000 from Monteith’s Best One and WNDU for showing the most school spirit all season long on Friday Night Football.

The five nominees for Spirit School of the year were among the nine weekly winners throughout the year.

Earlier this year, Triton won its first weekly award for the 16 Spirit Award in the 19 year history of the award.

A few weeks later the football team experienced incredible tragedy midway through the season when sophomore Cam Scarberry was killed in a car accident. The Triton High School and Bourbon community have rallied to lift the football team up.

Triton finished with a 6-3 regular season, their best since 1972. The Trojans opened 1A sectionals with a 42-13 win over Caston. Triton hosts Winamac Friday night in the sectional semifinals.
