Top wrestlers in Indiana converge on Mishawaka for tournament

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) - One of the biggest high school sporting events in the state is being staged at the historic "Cave" in Mishawaka this weekend.

The 42nd annual Al Smith Wrestling Invitational pits many of the state's top wrestlers against each other. In fact, the Top 6 seeds in the 220-pound class are a combined 97-1.

The tournament is named after the longtime Mishawaka Coach who, while retired, is still very active in staging the two-day event.

"A lot of wrestlers and coaches look at this as a prep for the individual state finals," Smith said. "The people they see here pretty much will be the same people they'll see in the state finals."

The tournament wraps up with championship and placement rounds Saturday.
