South Bend Cubs' opening night a huge hit despite weather

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - The two best words in sports, other than “Game 7,” are “opening night.” And on Thursday night, the South Bend Cubs defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-4.

Every April, the excitement surrounding the ballpark is what brings people in. Part of that excitement is the debut of new South Bend Cubs manager Buddy Bailey.

It is a new day, a new season with a lot of new things to look forward to, such as a new food menu, the new Ivy at Berlin Place Apartments, a new netting system behind home plate and the Midwest-Atlantic All Star Game.

“I have never been to a baseball game, and I’m excited,” new baseball fan Gracie O’Connell said.

Unlike O’Connell, Vern Stanley has been attending games at Four Winds Field since it was built.

“I have had a season ticket for 32 years now,” Stanley said.

Despite a cold and rainy day, the game went on, and so did the fans who love to say, “Go Cubs!”

The South Bend Cubs take on the West Michigan Whitecaps on Friday at 4 p.m.
