SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Both the Adams and Riley basketball teams will be paying homage to the old South Bend Central High School tonight.
The two schools decided to celebrate the legacy of the city's first high school as both teams will wear commemorative South Bend Central Bears jerseys.
This is a special night no doubt for South Bend but it will be especially memorable for Riley senior forward Gabe Johnson.
Johnson's grandfather Wayman Husband Junior played basketball for the Bears and graduated from Central back in 1969.
"What I know about South Bend Central, from what my grandfather tells me, is they had a really good legacy there," Johnson said. "It's good to be able to put the Bears across my chest and represent those guys who came before me."
When the teams were picking their jerseys for tonight's game, Johnson immediately went for #50 because that's the number his grandfather donned in high school.
"My grandfather is my biggest critic," Johnson said. "He's been the guy for me since Day 1 just teaching me the ins and outs of basketball. He's never given up on me so I appreciate him for that. He's the most influential person as far as basketball goes."
Johnson wanted to make sure this was a night they both would never forget.
"It's going to be a really fun moment for the family," Johnson said. "I've got the whole family coming out this Friday at Adams gym so it should be a lot of different energies and it should be a really fun time."
