For years, schools had to win their football game to get nominated for the 16 Spirit Award.

That rule had to change Friday night. When we showed up at Jackson Field, the support from the Riley student body was incredible. It was homecoming and the Wildcats were 0-5. On the field, it wasn't pretty with New Prairie scoring 70 points and Riley falling to 0-6.

But in the stands, there was that incredible support. The band played, the cheerleaders cheered and the students stayed positive and fired up in support of their team. They earned the right to get nominated and they didn't disappoint.

On Monday, Riley won the 16 Spirit Award voting and on thursday we presented the Wildcats with a plaque and check for $100 from Monteith's Best One for showing the most school spirit on last week's edition of Friday Night Football.

On Sunday, Riley and Edwardsburg were separated by just one actual vote. Each school had 30% of the vote. But the Wildcat fans changed all that. From Sunday afternoon to when the polls closed Monday at Noon, Riley fans stuffed the ballot box (that's a good thing in these types of votes!).

Riley ended up winning with 37% of the vote. Edwardsburg finished 2nd at 28% followed by Plymouth 14%, Jimtown !3% and Penn 7%.
