INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - John Mooney scored 21 points and D.J. Harvey added 19 to lead Notre Dame past Purdue 88-80 Saturday in the Crossroads Classic.
The Fighting Irish (7-3) ended a two-game losing streak.
Purdue (6-5, 1-1 Big Ten) has lost two straight, four of five and had a nine-game winning streak against in-state schools, which dated to February 2016, end. Carsen Edwards paced the Boilermakers with 27 points. Ryan Cline added 15.
Notre Dame's victory may have come at a high price, though.
One day after the school announced freshman guard Robby Carmody needed season-ending surgery for a torn labrum, starting guard Rex Pflueger was carried off the court and straight into the locker room with 5:36 to play. He watched the end of the game from the bench with his left knee packed in ice.
But even without Pflueger for the final flurry, the Irish never let Purdue make a serious challenge.
They opened the game by making 11 of their first 14 shots and eventually used a 12-2 spurt to take a 30-18 lead with 8:14 to go in the first half.
The Boilermakers closed the half on a 7-2 run, cutting the deficit to 36-29, and got as close as 42-38 with 16:01 left in the game.
Notre Dame answered with a putback and Harvey's 3-pointer rebuilt a nine-point cushion and the Boilermakers didn't get closer than five the rest of the game.
Notre Dame: The Irish completed a brutal nonconference stretch by going 3-2 against five straight power-conference teams. Things should get a little easier before heading into ACC play, and if they can overcome the injuries Notre Dame could emerge as a stronger team.
Purdue: The Boilermakers have struggled to find a consistent complementary scorer for Edwards and it looks like they will continue to struggle until they do.
