SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - This weekend is jam packed with conference championships, and since Notre Dame doesn't belong to any conferences, the Irish have the weekend off.
So, in order for a team who doesn't play in a conference championship to make it to the playoff they need to finish the season undefeated.
That's exactly what the Irish did last Saturday as Notre Dame took down USC 24-17 to end the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record.
In fact, head coach Brian Kelly knows quite well how to finish the season 12-0. He's done it three times at the Division 1 level - twice at Notre Dame and once at Cincinnati back in 2009.
Kelly says finishing a regular season undefeated is a tough task, and of the three teams he's coached to an unblemished record, he's most impressed with the 2018 Irish.
They are all difficult because you deal with distractions and today there is so much going on with social media," Kelly said. "There are so many things that can distract you from what the process is on a day-to-day basis. It just requires a lot of work on a day-to-day basis of keeping them in the lines if you will. I think this was the hardest of the three."
