After wrapping up the New-Gold game Sunday at the newly renovated Notre Dame Stadium, head coach Brian Kelly announced that junior running back Josh Adams will be the seventh team captain in 2017.

"Josh has been outstanding in our summer workouts and has distinguished himself to have all of the traits that I'm looking for that really represents a Captain,' said Kelly. "That's a high bar, especially for a man that is just a junior here so I'm really pleased to elevate him to the level of Captaincy."

Adams has been a great weapon in the Irish offense ever since he started taking reps as a true freshman in 2015.

Over the last two seasons, Adams has rushed for 1,768 yards (6.4 yards per carry) to go along with 11 touchdowns.

"I explained to the team how much it meant to me and it was an honor to be a part of that community and that team," said Adams. "Just being a part of that family was special for me.

"I explained that it wasn't just for me but it was about everybody in general because of the common bond and goal we have for each other to get better every day, so that's basically what it meant for me to receive that news."

Notre Dame will have its season opener September 2nd against Temple at 3:30pm at the newly renovated Notre Dame Stadium.
