John Mooney named Irish basketball team captain

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - One player who has stepped up for the Irish this season is forward John Mooney, who leads the ACC in rebounds and double doubles.

While Mike Brey likes what he brings to the team on the court, he appreciates the leadership Mooney brings off the court. That's why yesterday Brey named Mooney one of the three team captains.

"The one thing about [Mooney] that you like is emotionally he's really steady throughout a game and I think that can help as we endorse him officially as a captain now," Brey said.

Mooney is thrilled for the opportunity.

"It's a tremendous honor," Mooney said. "It puts a little precedent on me to lead these guys especially with my voice and actions so I'm excited for this new role. It's a challenge but it's a good opportunity for myself."

Mooney and the Irish will play Purdue at the Crossroads Classic this Saturday in Indianapolis.

Tip off is at 1:30 PM on CBS.
