Notre Dame safety Alohi Gilman is an expert when it comes to Navy. That's not because he's watched a lot of film though - it's because he played there.
Gilman began his college career in Annapolis. He enrolled in 2016, and started for the Midshipmen his freshman year. That year, Navy played Notre Dame down in Jacksonville, and Gilman led the Middies with 12 tackles in their 28-27 win over the Irish.
Shortly after that game though, he left the academy and transferred to Notre Dame, due in part to his desire to play in the NFL after college.
Now, Gilman is making plays for the Irish secondary, and will get to line up against his former teammates for the first time on Saturday.
"It's going to be exciting," Gilman said. "I'm still in communication with them, I still talk to them here and there, we have some fun conversations obviously, so it's going to be an exciting game. Excited to get out there and play against the triple option, I actually love playing against that option. I'm just excited to play."
"They've called me a few times, trying to get some secrets," Gilman joked about his former teammates. "It's been fun and I'm excited."
#3 Notre Dame will put their perfect record on the line against Navy in the 90th meeting between the two schools, Saturday night at 8pm in San Diego. The game will air on CBS.
