UPDATE: Man rescued after crashing car into Mishawaka pond

MISHAWAKA Ind. (WNDU) - At around 6:30 p.m., the man was driving east on Douglas Rd. near the Main Street Village Apartments.

Witnesses said they saw the man veer off the road and head right into the pond.

The Mishawaka Fire Department says one of its firefighters, Mark Taylor, and a police officer jumped in and pulled the man from the vehicle.

The first responders were at the scene within two minutes and were able to get the man through a back window.

NewsCenter 16 had the opportunity to talk to one man who said his daughter and another good Samaritan also stepped in to help.

"This car slowly starts to edge over towards the curb, and he jumped the curb and drove right into the lake," said Gene Lee, one of the witnesses. "Very slow. Maybe five miles per hour at the most."

Fire crews aren't sure what exactly caused the man to drive into the lake but say it was likely a medical issue.
