SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - A baby was inside a vehicle that was carjacked in South Bend Monday afternoon.
It happened at the McDonald's on Lincoln Way West, near South Bend International Airport.
Police say the aunt of a 3-year-old boy left the child inside the car while it was running and unlocked.
"Through the investigation, it was learned the suspect approached the unlocked and running vehicle and drove away while the driver was inside a restaurant," South Bend Police Department spokesman Ken Garcia said.
The alleged carjacker stole the car and drove off shortly after arriving in a silver SUV.
The vehicle was quickly recovered nearby, just a block away at Lincoln Way West and Iowa.
"A number of people came forward to give us information about where this person was running, and that definitely helped our officers locate the suspect and get the suspect detained," Garcia said.
The driver ran from police, but he was caught and detained. Police say he's a juvenile black male.
The suspect will spend the night at Juvenile Justice Center, where he is now awaiting charges.
The child who was in the car when it was carjacked was returned to his family unharmed.
