Van Buren County crash leaves two dead, including six-year-old

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- A two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon has left two people dead and three others in critical condition.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department says it happened in the 60,000 block of Red Arrow Highway in Hartford Township shortly after 2:30 p.m.

Officials say a 23-year-old Benton Harbor man was driving a Chevy Equinox eastbound when it crossed the center line, causing it to hit a westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee head on. The driver of that car, a 73-year-old woman, died at the scene. One passenger, a 6-year-old girl from Coloma, was taken to Spectrum Health Lakeland in Watervliet, where she passed away.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Our reporting partners at WSJM say the driver of the Equinox and a one-year-old passenger are in the hospital in critical condition, as well as another passengers in the Cherokee, a 57-year-old Paw Paw woman.

The investigation is ongoing.
