One man killed in South Bend home invasion

A press release from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office:

Wednesday evening at approximately 11:30 p.m., South Bend Police Department (SBPD) officers were called to a house in the 2200 block of South Kendall Street in reference to a shooting. Officers found two individuals suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. One individual, Joseph Brown, 31, was taken to the hospital and later pronounced deceased. A second individual, Dustin Bierwagen, 29, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and was treated and released. Mr. Brown and Mr. Bierwagen were roommates at the Kendall Street address.

The County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) was called per protocol to handle the investigation. CMHU is investigating this as a home invasion. CMHU interviewed several witnesses, including other individuals who were in the home. According to witnesses, two black male suspects were seen leaving the scene.

An autopsy for Mr. Brown is scheduled for Friday morning, May 19, 2017, in Kalamazoo, MI.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. We will provide more information regarding this investigation as we are able to do so.

Metro Homicide is investigating a deadly home invasion that happened late Wednesday night.

Police were called to the 2200 block of South Kendall St. at around 11:30 p.m.

Officers found two men who lived together had been shot.

One victim, in his 20s, was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Authorities say he later died.

The second victim has just a minor injury and was treated and released.

Their names have not yet been released.

Metro Homicide says they have spoken to about 6 witnesses. There were other people inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Investigators say two black males were seen leaving the area.
