UPDATE: Metro Homicide investigating shooting death of 19-year-old

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) Police are investigating the shooting death of a 19-year-old woman on the east side of South Bend Wednesday.

Officers were called around 11:49 a.m. to Corby Homes on Patty Lane, just southeast of Ironwood Drive and Edison Road.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating the woman's death as a homicide.

As of about 3:45 p.m., the St. Joseph County Coroner's Office remained on the scene. Also there were about a dozen family and friends.

Officials with Metro Homicide told 16 News Now that family of the deceased woman came to check on her earlier Wednesday and found her shot to death in a first-floor apartment.

Off camera, family members said the victim had a baby, adding, "She didn't have to go like this."

"There's a lot of upset friends and possibly family members out here, but I want to make sure that we contact all next-to-kin before we release her name," said Dave Wells with St. Joseph County Metro Homicide.

While on scene, kids who live in the complex were peeking their heads out the window, watching. Some kids even went up to officers asking what happened.

Off camera, some neighbors said they saw a lot of traffic coming in and out of that apartment unit.

Other neighbors said South Bend needs to stop the violence.

"It's just sad, you know? Like you never know what's going to happen, or who is out here to get who. Words can't even explain how I feel right now because it's just every day. You see something like this every single day," neighbor Unique Hunter said.

A month and a half into 2020, the St. Joseph County Coroner's Office said there have been 75 deaths.

"All my condolences to her family, and I just pray that they work this out and that everything is just OK," Hunter said.

Police have not released any information on a potential suspect or suspects.

An autopsy has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in Fort Wayne.
