South Bend company launches 'out-of-this-world' project

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Manufacturing Technology Inc., or MTI, is helping create a space launch system for NASA.

MTI is a supplier for Aerojet Rocketdyne, which is building the booster engines for the rocket.

MTI welds part of the engines locally here in South Bend.

Today, representatives from NASA, Aerojet, Boeing and others gathered at MTI to celebrate the massive project.

They say the RS25 is the most powerful SLS rocket ever designed and built.

Brian Duffy, a veteran NASA astronaut, says this project will take space travel to the next level.

"This project that we're working on, the Ryan space craft and the space launch system, is going be the newest, safest, most capable system," he said. "Both the crew module and the rocket they're going to allow us to go where humans have never been before."
Mayor Pete Buttigieg was also in attendance.

"You know the idea that the path to Mars goes right here through the west side of South Bend is something I think all of us can be proud of," said Mayor Buttigieg. "It shows that the quality of what the workers here are doing, the quality of the companies is is strong enough that they can be trusted with the lives of astronauts."

Duffy says he believes that MTI employees will feel a tremendous amount of pride when the rocket finally reaches space.
