Some of the best chefs in the country competed in a national competition right here in South Bend Wednesday.

The inaugural Food Summit, held by Interstate Hotels and Resorts, took place at the Gillespie Conference Center.

More than 500 hotels nominated their chefs for the initial competition. On Wednesday afternoon, eight executive chefs prepared their best dishes in the final showdown.

NewsCenter 16's own Joshua Short served as the event's emcee, even sneaking some samples when he got the chance.

Event organizers said the Food Summit was a way to showcase the importance of hotel and banquet foods.

"We could share ideas and ensure that we improve our banquet offerings," said Kory Demeulenaere, of Interstate Hotel and Resorts. "Eating in a banquet space isn't the same as it used to be and having an event in a conference center is more like dining out in a restaurant - more of a private experience."

The winner of Food Summit goes on to represent the United States on the world stage.

The world tapas competition takes place this November in Spain.
