Sledding safety tips from firefighters

Firefighters want to remind the community about sledding safety after a child fell through the ice on a pond while sledding Saturday in Clay Township.

Thankfully, they were able to get the child out, but it's important to know how to remain safe while out on the slopes.

Here's how officials recommend you stay safe:

  • Make sure your equipment is free of sharp edges and cracks.
  • Sled on spacious hills with a level run-off at the end.
  • Check slopes for bare spots, holes or rocks.
  • Always lie on your back and never go down a hill head-first.
